Don't let the simplicity of its name fool you - The Blue, a 13.22 ct. pear shape fancy vivid blue diamond is the largest flawless fancy vivid blue gem in the world! At its May 14 Magnificent Jewels Sale in Geneva, Christie’s will auction The Blue which carries a $21 million–$25 million estimate. It is also the largest fancy vivid blue diamond to ever appear at auction.
Blue diamonds are extremely rare and make up less than two per cent of the world's diamond production. Like most blue diamonds, ‘The Blue’ is thought to have been mined in South Africa. Christie’s would not reveal the owner of the jewel, but said it had been in the owner’s possession for a long time. The owner approached them after seeing several color diamonds fetch record prices in recent sales.
The Blue will be in good company - another amazing stone will be sold at the auction on May 14th.
The Blue will be sold alongside the Ocean Dream, a 5.5 ct. fancy vivid blue-green stone that is considered the largest fancy vivid blue-green diamond in the world. It carries a $7.5 million–$9 million estimate.
