Tip for the Day: How to Use Cream Shadows

Today, let's talk about eye shadow bases!  Eye shadow primers like Urban Decay Primer Potion and Too Faced Shadow Insurance made it to the "most mentioned" eye shadow primer brands (personal observation) and I am one guilty blogger who uses these 2 dearly.  But lately, well, actually, it was last year when I started to realize how much I prefer cream shadow bases used as eye shadow primers instead!  Here are just SOME of the many cream shadows I use (personally and professionally).

1. Yves Rocher Metalglow Cream Shadow in Ombre Cream Metal (review HERE)
2. MAC Paint Pot in Coral Crepe (thanks blogger friend Connie for this)
3. Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in Bone (review HERE)
4. Benefit Creaseless Cream in Holy Smokes! (old packaging review HERE)

I find myself relying heavily on these as they do not only keep my eye shadow from creasing, I can even wear these on it's own without me having to worry about fall outs (from powdered shadows).

Here are some simple tips on how to maximize your cream shadows ---
  • Use your fingers in application if you want to "warm up" the product creating a smooth and even application.

Product used: MAC paint pot in Coral Crepe
  • If you want less pigmentation, use an eye shadow blending brush or any eye shadow brush in application.  (ex. MAC 217).  A flat shader brush can also be used for more pigmentation.
  • Cream shadows are best applied on the lid not going beyond the crease.
How to find the "end" of your crease?
Try bending your head backwards and close your eyes halfway, you will see a define line above your eyeball just below the eyebrow.
  • If you want your cream shadows to appear more vibrant, build the color layer by layer to avoid creasing.  Make sure to give a bit of drying time on first layer before you proceed to the next.
  • You can leave your cream shadow as it is for a very simple look.
  • If you want to continue using the cream shadow as your base, top your choice of powdered shadow using patting motion.
  • As for the "drying" problem of most cream shadows, I make sure to seal the cap tight after every use or even in between use.
  • I store the product upside down for the "oil" of the product to get evenly distributed on top.
  • If your MAC Paint Pot dried out just like mine on photo above, I put it inside a ziplock bag and warm the product up in a cup of warm water before use.

These are just some of the many tips I could think of when it comes to using Cream Shadows.
