Concealer: Estee Lauder Vs. MAC

Recently i have been stuck in a make up rut and i haven't been trying very many new products which i love enough to make part of my daily routine. There have been so many new beauty launches that surely something would take my fancy. My favourite products to buy and play with a little bit more are eye shadows and lipsticks so i have plenty of each but other than that my collection remains the same. I definitely stick to a lot of the same base products and just replace them when they run out rather than taking the time to pick something new. I think it is the fear that something isn't going to work as well as the last product i tried and i will be stuck with it. I know this will make me a bad beauty blogger for saying this but i don't like having thousands of products opened and half used, not only do i not have the space in my collection but i also don't have the money to waste.

In order to rectify this situation i have decided to branch and try something new when i run out of a staple product. You might have seen my mascara comparison from a few weeks ago which compared the Tom Ford Extreme Mascara which i have been using for years and my newer purchase the Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara. This was the start of my move away from the known into the unknown. I had a good experience with switching up my mascara and as i have recently come to the end of my concealer i thought i would do the same thing and go out and look for something different.

As always with all of my new purchases, i do a lot of research on a product and try to see as many reviews of a product as i possibly can. Usually i already have something in mind as i do like to watch a lot of Youtube videos and i read a lot of blogs but i guess concealer isn't one of the most exciting products as it doesn't seem to get mentioned as often.

For a few years i have been using the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-place High Cover Concealer in 1W Light (Warm). It is a pot concealer which gives a full coverage, i love to use it under my eyes and to cover spots and found it good for both. Lately i have really been struggling with lots of breakouts so a good concealer has been necessary. My skin is pretty much translucent so if i get a spot you can really see it and the red mark lasts for quite a long time so i need a good coverage which is long lasting. The reason i stuck with this one for so long was because it worked and really covered everything and stayed on for a long time. I have always been worried that i wouldn't be able to find a concealer which was as good.

Over time, and a lot of trial and error, i have learnt that i prefer a pot concealer rather than a cream based one with a doe foot applicator as i don't find they sit very well on my skin or last very long. So that instantly ruled out that sort of concealer. I was thinking about trying the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer but i knew i wouldn't like the mode of application and after looking at reviews people have very mixed opinions on it. A lot of people love it but the people who didn't like it had a problem with the way you apply it so i knew it wouldn't be a good one for me.

I started to look into other concealers which were like the Estee Lauder one and remembered that my best friend used the pot concealer from MAC which is the Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer. After reading reviews and comparing it to the Estee Lauder one i realised i should try this one. I once used the Pro Longwear Concealer from MAC and i hated it, at the time i wrote a review on my blog so i will link that below.

The Estee Lauder concealer that i love so much is SPF 35, it claims it has a 12 hour wear time which is hard to tell because it is under your foundation but it always seemed to last. It is light weight so you don't feel it on your face but it has amazing coverage. It is oil-free and doesn't cake if you don't use too much. If you use too much or don't blend it enough it can cake into any wrinkles you might have so that is something to be wary of. In comparison the MAC concealer; has SPF 35, states 12 hour wear time, is water resistant, supposed to control oils and it is fragrance free. To me the two concealers sound very similar so i have had a look on both websites and i written below what they say about each product:

MAC Studio Finish Concealer

  • Offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 35
  • Long Lasting 12 Hours
  • Emollient Based
  • Controls Oils
  • Rich in Antioxidants
  • Water Resistant
  • Fragrance Free
  • No Acnegenic
Estee Lauder Double Wear Concealer
  • Broad Spectrum SPF 35
  • Oil free, oil controlling
  • Ophthalmologist tested
  • Dermatologist tested
  • Fragrance free
  • Water, perspiration and humidity resistant
  • Built in setting powder

Now i don't want to say anything unjustified however MAC is owned by Estee Lauder and when you read the two descriptions they do seen very similar! Now i'm not saying this is a bad thing however the Estee Lauder concealer is £22.50 for 3g whereas the MAC one is £16 for 7g and it is pretty much the same.

In terms of shade range there are 23 different MAC shades and i was matched to NC20 which i have actually loved more than the Estee Lauder shade, it has warmer undertones which i need to match my foundation and to counteract the amount of redness i have on my skin. The Estee Lauder concealer limits you with only 11 shades but it is quite a good shade range so everyone should be able to find something for them.

To me it is a no brainer and i will now be buying the MAC concealer from now on as you get more product for less money and they pretty much seem the same. I have only been using the MAC concealer for a few weeks but i can safely say it is similar to the Estee Lauder concealer. I do like the Estee Lauder one and i would recommend it to anyone but why would you buy it when the MAC one is pretty much the same for cheaper? Another benefit of the MAC concealer is if you save the pot it can count towards your Back to MAC. I realise this means i haven't really branched out if they are pretty much the same but in my mind, i've tried something new and this is a step forward in my own makeup shake up.
